Meet your host

Thomas A. Mengesha, MPA, JD

From enlisted soldier to Army officer, from the courtroom to the classroom, Thomas brings a lifetime of service to one mission: helping people make informed decisions about their money, their benefits, and their next chapter.

Known to his audience as The Adjutant, Thomas served more than 26 years in the United States Army, beginning as an E-1 and rising to commissioned officer. His career gave him a view of military life from both sides of leadership—the person carrying out the mission and the officer responsible for the people and resources behind it. In Kuwait, he held executive responsibility for a nearly $700 million program supporting the Iraq theater.

His military service also included duty as a cryptographic-material noncommissioned officer with I Corps at Fort Lewis, Washington. He held a Top Secret security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access—a chapter of his career that demanded discretion, accountability, and careful stewardship of sensitive material.

Beyond the uniform, Thomas built a career as an attorney and college educator, teaching business law and ethics. His Master of Public Administration and Juris Doctor complement that experience with a foundation in public service, institutions, and legal reasoning. Years of work in veterans-benefits adjudication further shaped his ability to examine complex rules, weigh evidence, and explain consequential decisions clearly.

His experience in front of a camera began long before The Adjutant. While practicing law in Michigan, Thomas also hosted his own public-access television talk show. Today, The Adjutant brings together that broadcasting experience and a career spanning military leadership, law, education, and public service.

Through The Adjutant, he brings those perspectives together to explore military wealth, earned benefits, retirement readiness, leadership, and life after service. The purpose is practical: help you understand your options, ask better questions, and turn information into a plan you can use.

Because a successful next chapter is about more than income. It is also about the people you care for, the freedom to choose how you spend your time, and a life that continues to have purpose.

The Adjutant is an independent educational platform. Thomas speaks in his personal capacity, not on behalf of the Department of Veterans Affairs or any government agency.
